Rahul Gandhi’s first major TV appearance sends mixed signals to Indian voters. Gandhi faced a barrage of questions on his past, his political beliefs, his dynastic origins, and his developmental agenda.“To understand that question you have to understand a little bit about
who Rahul Gandhi is and what Rahul Gandhi's circumstances have been and
if you delve into that you will get an answer to the question of what
Rahul Gandhi is scared of and what he is not scared of.”
Policy is not Gandhi’s strong suit. And after presiding over a halving
of the GDP growth rate, Congress has little credibility left on the
economy. Still, he’d do better to start talking more specifically about
how to revive growth and how exactly to create that manufacturing sector
-- critical to absorb the tens of millions of young Indians soon to
enter the labor force. At least he wouldn’t sound as silly as he does
talking about himself.
The Indian Express said of him that he “is still million detached, speaking of faraway things.”
The Telegraph said “his thinking is shallow and unclear.”
The Times of India said he is “poorly groomed for a mega-contest in one of the world's toughest democracies.”
The Hindustan Times said “the interview was a let-down, widely lampooned.”

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Ravi Shankar Prasad said Rahul’s
interview with Times Now news channel was “a performance of evasion,
which was amateurish, rank falsehood and unfortunately of rank
ignorance”.
Rahul Gandhi said in the TV interview that the difference between the
1984 riots and the 2002 riots in Gujarat was that in 1984 the government
was trying to stop the violence, while in Gujarat the government was
“abetting and pushing” the riots.
What was disappointing for his followers was Gandhi’s failure to take on
Modi head on. He failed to mount the kind of hard-hitting response that
one would expect from a Congress leader. He, however, blamed the BJP
leader for abetting riots in 2002 that claimed more than 1000 lives of
minority Muslims , he targeted the opposition's prime
ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, accusing his administration in
Gujarat of abetting attacks against Muslims there in another series of
riots in 2002.
